Pre-Licensing Education

Examination

The exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, and it lasts up to 3 hours and 15 minutes. You need a score of at least 70% to pass.
The California real estate license exam is one of the most difficult in the nation. The pass rate was less than 50% for 2023 and 2022.

What to Expect on Exam Day
Background Check
Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
This is required to ensure you meet the ethical standards required for licensure.
Fingerprints must be submitted electronically through the DOJ’s Live Scan Program. Here’s a list of the Live Scan locations.
This transmits fingerprints to both the DOJ and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) using the Live Scan Service Request (RE 237)

Non-California Residents
If you do not reside in California, you may be fingerprinted out-of-state using two FBI Applicant Fingerprint Cards (FD-258).*
You’ll bring the FBI Applicant Fingerprint Cards to a local law enforcement agency for completion.
At that point, they can be submitted directly to DRE, along with the completed license application, the license application fee, and the $49 fingerprint processing fee.

Application
After passing the exam and completing the background check, submit your license application to the California Department of Real Estate.
