5 LinkedIn Tips for Real Estate Professionals

In this article, I will teach you tricks that will get you in front of new LinkedIn prospects, increase your followers, and make sure your name is the first your connections see when looking through their LinkedIn contacts on a mobile device.

I am not going to focus on the basic How-Tos. This is not yet another tutorial on how to create the perfect LinkedIn profile, though here are some excellent articles on how to do exactly that, should you need them:

Instead, I’m going to focus on the things that directly impact your day to day business. Specifically, the small tricks that can get you in front of new Real Estate Prospectsgrow your LinkedIn traffic, and improve your LinkedIn reputation, so the leads you do get are further down the sales funnel.

Hack #1: Get in Front of NEW Prospects with LinkedIn Profinder

LinkedIn is experimenting with a new program called Profinder. Look at the results below for what happens when you do a search like:  “Real Estate Agent LinkedIn”.

Search results screen for the Google search "Real Estate Agent LinkedIn"
Search results screen for the Google search “Real Estate Agent LinkedIn”

When you click on the LinkedIn results, the annotated searches dump you into a “landing page” like this:

Top results for LinkedIn’s real estate agents.
Top results for LinkedIn’s real estate agents.

Please note the top line of “See all 1,296 pros”! 235,000+ professionals list themselves as “Real Estate Agents” on LinkedIn, but less than 1% of them are utilizing this new tool. Now is the time to enroll in this beta program before LinkedIn monetizes it and your friends and co-workers realize there is a potentially free new lead source.

Hack #2: Improve Your LinkedIn “Skills” to Drive More Visitors

LinkedIn uses “skills” categories to identify expertise and thus potentially drive traffic to your profile for those doing searches for those skills.

My "top skills" on LinkedIn.
My “top skills” on LinkedIn.

In order to capitalize on this, you need to make sure you have your “Skills” list filled out completely. Here are some common “skills” that real estate agents would list:

    • Sellers
    • Relocation
    • First Time Home Buyers
    • Investment Properties
    • Buyer representation
    • Single Family Homes
    • Real Estate transaction

LinkedIn’s search algorithm takes into account not only how many endorsements for these skills you have, but the number of skills listed. These skills are also used to determine lead allocation in the LinkedIN Profinder program mentioned in Hack #1.

Hack #3: More Recommendations Equals More Leads and Sales

Do I really need to spell it out? How do YOU shop for new vendors or service providers? Think about it. I personally look on Google+, Facebook, Yelp, and (of course) LinkedIn for reviews before I purchase any product or service. There is no such thing as too many reviews. (Unless you have bad ones. Then there is definitely such a thing as too many.)

One way of increasing LinkedIn recommendations is to find a list of all of all of your past transactions and search by client name in LinkedIn. When you find them, send your clients the following message from your LinkedIn profile:

Subject: Did I do a good job?

Message Body:

Mr/Mrs __________,

Some years ago I had the good fortune to buy/sell you a home. At the time helping you find your dream home was all the thanks a professional real estate agent would ever need. But technology has changed the real estate game and now many people look for online reviews before deciding who to give their business to. I use LinkedIn frequently to connect with clients. It has a feature that allows me to “ask for recommendations.” Would it be ok if I used this feature with you?

Sincerely,

(your name)

Hack #4: Using Keywords Correctly Significantly Improves Your Chances of Being Found on LinkedIn

Here is a screen capture that illustrates where LinkedIn pulls keywords from:

LinkedIn Keyword Selection
LinkedIn pulls keywords from multiple places.

When it comes to keywords, LinkedIn looks at your job title, summary, past job experience, education, and interests. If you would like a detailed tutorial on creating a keyword rich LinkedIn profile, watch the below video, created especially for this blog post.

Hack #5: Use Symbols to Appear First on Clients’ Mobile LinkedIn Connections

Of course we saved the best for last. I have 3600+ LinkedIn connections. Four of those connections have SYMBOLS in front of their names. Look at the screen capture below. Those contacts come up first regardless of their last name. (Note: this is on LinkedIn mobile only. Desktop views are different.)

Symbols make you number one in LinkedIn mobile connections.

To make the same change on your profile go to “Profile”, then “Edit Profile.”  You will see the screen below:

You can then copy and paste from this list of symbols.

How InboundREM Can Boost Your Business Permanently

I founded InboundREM to help real estate professionals capitalize on the most effective marketing strategy for long-term ROI.

SEO-focused inbound marketing is far and away the best method for driving more and hotter leads. Building a website with evergreen content is like the difference between buying a house and renting.

While the renting vs. buying metaphor is a strong one, it unfortunately breaks down in most cases because very few real estate website builders actually allow you to OWN your website.

Instead, they force you to lease the very content you paid to build, which essentially grants them all the equity and makes it difficult for clients to break from a contract when the company fails to perform as promised.

InboundREM works differently. All of our clients OWN their website from Day 1. There’s zero nickel-and-diming. There are no contract breakage penalties. We rely fully on outstanding performance, rather than the somewhat underhanded contractual practices that have become the industry standard.

If you’re established enough as a realtor to spend some time and money upfront for a long-term payoff, I encourage you to get in touch right now.
